A unique large-scale canvas “Squares on a grey background”, dated 1960-s, (estimated at €50,000) and a “Self-portrait” (estimated at €3,000) by a prominent Finnish abstract artist Ernst Mether-Borgström (1917 – 1996) will be offered at the upcoming auction. Ernst Mether-Borgström was among the first artists to introduce concrete art in Finland in 1940 – 1950-s. In 1965 he was granted a high state award “Pro Finlandia”. His paintings make part of the collections of the world leading museums.

Note: “Squares on a grey background” was exhibited at EMMA in 2017.

A renowned author of a series of stories about moomintrolls Tove Jansson (1914 – 2001) aspired to become an artist. Her popular Moomin charaters and illustrations to the books were created by herlsef. Rare artwork “Interior”, dated 1961, (estimated at €2,000) and “Shore in Autumn”, dated 1959, (estimated at €3,000) by Tove Jansson will be featured at the upcoming auction.

Note: “Interior” (1961) has fine cracking.

Leena Luostarinen (1949 – 2013) is famous for her post-impressionism works depicting animals. In 1995 she received a high state award “Pro Finlandia”. Her “Harbour of Iliad” (estimated at €12,000) executed in 1975, will be offered at the upcoming sale.

Ahti Lavonen (1928 – 1970) was one of the key artists, who influeced Finnish modernism in 1960-s. His large-scale canvas “Aurora” (estimated at €10,000) of almost 4 m length canvas will be offered at the auciton.

A sculpture “Lion Cub” (estimated at €5,000) modeled by a renowned ceramic artist Michael Shilkin (1900 – 1962) will be part of the upcoming sale. Michael Shilkin was born in the Russian Empire. He spent his childhood in the Tver Governorate and worked in St. Petersburg. In 1921 Michael Shilkin emigrated to Finland and in 1927 graduated from the School of Design (Aalto University). Further he started to work at the Finnish ceramics company “Arabia”, where he worked for the rest of his life. In 1937 Michael Shilkin receved a golden medal at the International Exposition of Art and Technology in Modern Life held in Paris.

Miina Äkkijyrkkä (b. 1949) is known for her sculptures depicting calves, cows and bulls. The artist is an ardent defender of the traditional Finnish cattle breed “Finncattle”. A bronze sculpture “Calf” (estimated at €2,000) will be featured at the upcoming sale.
