XVIth century European armour from a private Swiss collection at the autumn Koller Auctions sales


Zurich - Koller Auctions will hold a traditional autumn auction between 23-25 September 2020, and will present a large collection of books and manuscripts, porcelain, furniture, carpets, Old Masters paintings and drawings and works of artists of the XIXth century, as well as rare XVIth century European armour from a private collection in Lucerne.

The auction will feature an extremely rare type of helmet – "Landsknecht" or "Jagdhelm", German or Italian from ca. 1515-25 (estimated at € 1’750 - 2’460). A similar example can be found in the Swiss National Museum. Blank iron, partly corroded one-part skull, with three chased and ribbed bulges. The neck part features a riveted, two-part sleeve for a feather. Cheekpieces, each with seven punctiform perforations. Perforations distributed over the helmet surface, for fastening a fabric lining.

Burgonet helmet, Italian, "Borgognotta aguzza", last third of the XVIth century (estimated at € 1’580 - 1’930). Probably, Brescia. A similar type can be found in The Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan. Blank iron. One-part skull, ending in a tip and with a central peak. Eye shield, neck shield and the cheekpieces with chased edges. Skull base with riveted brass rosettes, the cheekpieces each with five punctiform perforations. Eye guard and neck guard and cheekpieces with ribbed edges.

Burgonet helmet, German or Austrian, ca. 1570-80 (estimated at € 1’580 - 1’930). A similar type can be found in the Swiss National Museum. Blackened iron. One-part skull with ribbed peak, both sides decorated with an ornamental band. Movable eye guard with chased, blank edge, riveted neck guard and cheekpieces likewise with a chased edge. Cheekpieces, each with five punctiform perforations. Eye shield and neck shield with ribbed borders.

One-part skull with ribbed peak, transitioning into the eye guard. Nuremberg mark, indistinct. Neck guard, riveted. Cheekpieces, with five punctiform perforations each. Eye and neck guards as well as cheekpieces with ribbed edges.

Armour Breastplate, German or Italian, ca. 1510-20 (estimated at € 790 - 1’230). Blank iron, slightly corroded. The top and the cut-outs for the arms, decorated with twisted bulging edges, with engraved lines. Lacking fauld. Similar rare armour breastplate from the time of the Marignano, 1515, can be found in the Swiss National Museum.
