The top lot at the auction will be Swiss artist Felix Vallotton's "La Seine à Valvins" (estimated at 100,000 – 150,000 CHF). From 1901 onwards, Vallotton develops a completely new style of very modern landscape representation based on the principles of minimalism that the artist discovered while working with the "Les Nabis" group in Paris. Moving away from realism in favour of a flat image and a simplification of lines, Vallotton strove to convey the mood and atmosphere of the landscape. Vallotton worked in this type of "composite landscape" style from the age of maturity in his art throughout his entire life. The canvas from 1901 on display is one of the first works in this genre and vividly demonstrates the transition of the artist to a new manner of art. The landscape was painted in Valvins on the shores of the Seine river, not far from Fontainbleau — the preferred place of artists from the end of the XIX century. Vallotton's work reflects a search for the whole, not allowing the opportunity to guess the time of day: colour is layered on surfaces, contrasting and forming simple geometric shapes that come together into a landscape. The painting presented thereby precedes the work of the first abstractionists of the 1910s.

"I dream of a painting that is removed in every literal sense from nature, I would like to create landscapes based only on the emotions that they have evoked in me, a few big evocative lines, one or two details, chosen without a penchant for exactitude, time, or lighting," said Vallotton (Marina Ducret, “Felix Valloton”, ed. Edita, Lausanne, 1989).
