From impressionism to Art Brut: spring sale 2019 at the Piguet auction house in Geneva

On May 21st, 22nd and 23rd, 2019, the Genevan auction house Piguet will be hosting their spring auction and offering important works of the renowned artists from the XIX-XXth centuries.

“Yong man with a bowl of rice” (estimated at 600 – 800 CHF) from the Russian artist Alexander Chirkov (1865-1913) will be featured at the sale. The works of the painter included into the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum.

Rare impressionist paintings

“I like the paintings which makes me want to stroll in it, if it is a landscape, or to stroke it, if it is a woman,” said Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Three lots from the upcoming sale refer to the “pearly” period in Renoir’s career, when he used thin brush strokes and the colours were soft and joyous.

Moving away from the academic manner of painting Jean Béraud (1849-1935), renown for his paitings of the Parisian genre scenes, later in his career referred to impressionism, which impact is noticeable in his painting "Les ouvriers" (estimated at 30,000 – 50,000 CHF), offered at auciton.

The art of Henri Baptiste Lebasque (1865-1937) is full of joy and celebration of life. His work "Deux jeunes filles devant la mer" (estimated at 30,000 – 50,000 CHF) was probably executed in Saint-Jean-de-Monts in Vendée. The scene is painted in soft hues and the female figures make a whole with the backround of the waterfront. Broad strokes are typical for the mature period in the career of the atist.

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) "Jockey à cheval" (estimated at 15,000 – 25,000 CHF) is a monotype, a technique the artist introduced in the 1870-s. The theme of horse races appeared in the art of Degas after his trip to Italy in 1858, when the painter became interested in this kind of sport thanks to his friend Gustave Moreau. Degas then sought to capture professional jockey gestures and poses.

Known primarily as a caricaturist Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) may be counted a father of impressionism. Seeking new techniques the artist depicted people as part of the surrounding world deliberately using the light to balance the faces and figures against a background.

"Le premier bain" (estimated at 60,000 – 80,000 CHF) shows a touching scene with a father bathing his baby. A silouette of a woman with a child in a background resonates with the scene of Daumier renown painting “The Laundress” (1850 – 1853).

Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) is the founder of the movement in the art known as Art Brut. As the artist once said, this kind of art is free from the influence of culture and society and represents pure creative work.

A series of the works with ink imprints shows a close-up view of a road. Such fragments of the road surface refer not only to the condition of roads but also the ground, for which more space should be left in the world today.

The artist executed these paintings at any place because he could not find the right space for his studio having moved to Vence with his wife in 1955.

The work “Scintillement au sol du chemin" (estimated at 60,000 – 80,000 CHF) shows imprints of the leaves made with black ink on paper.

The acquaintace of Serge Poliakoff (1900-1969) with Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) had a great impact on his work. Subsequently the painter switched to abstractionism from the academic manner of painting and received wide public recognition. His lithography “Composition” (estimated at 1,000 – 1,500 CHF) will be auctioned at the upcoming sale.
