Rare works of art by artists from the XV-XIXth centuries at the Schuler Auktionen in Zurich on December 14th, 2018

On December 14th, 2018, the Swiss auction house Schuler Auktionen will put up paintings from the XV-XIX centuries.

To see all lots

Alessandro Magnasco. A Faun and a Satyr Play Musical Instruments Near a Tombstone in the Woods.
Alessandro Magnasco (1667-1749).
"A Faun and a Satyr Play Musical Instruments Near a Tombstone in the Woods."
Canvas/oil. 89*125.5 cm.
More images here.

One of the main lots at the upcoming auction will be the large-scale painting “A Faun and a Satyr Play Musical Instruments Beside a Tombstone in the Woods” (estimated at €10,910-16,360), which was created by Alessandro Magnasco (Genoa, 1667-1749) between 1720-1733 in a manner typical of the artist. The painting is comparable to “Triumph of Venus” (1720-1730), in which Magnasco portrays a nymph in a similar fashion and which can be found in the Getty Museum collection. An edgy stroke, strong color contrasts between forms, and a pre-impressionist landscape are characteristic of this work featured at the auction. During this period, Magnasco was at the peak of his career. On top of that, the general ethereality of the landscape, the blue mountains and the tree outlines can attest that the painting’s background was done by the painter Antonio Francesco Peruzzini.

Note: canvas relined.

Elisabetta Marchionni. Flowers in a Porcelain Vase Standing Next to a Small Bouquet in a Bronze Vase.
Elisabetta Marchionni (2nd half of 17th century - 1st half of 18th century)
“Flowers in a Porcelain Vase Standing Next to a Small Bouquet in a Bronze Vase”.
Signed in bottom left.
Canvas/oil. 110*42 сm.

Another important lot will be two paintings at once by Italian artist Elisabetta Marchionni (Rovigo, 2nd half of 17th century - 1st half of 18th century) - “Flowers in a Porcelain Vase Standing Next to a Small Bouquet in a Bronze Vase” (estimated at €10,910-16,360). Elisabetta Marchionni is one of the most striking representatives of Venetian still-life painting of the 18th century. The artist was so often compared to Francesco Guardi that Elisabetta Marchionni’s art began to be known as the “Francesco Marchionni of flowers”. The artist’s compositions often include renditions of two vases of different material atop a dark green podium, which creates a picturisque effect due to the contrast to the bright flowers.

Note: canvases relined, canvas stretchers replaced. One of the paintings contains a vertical crack in the canvas (top to bottom).

Provenance: private collection, Switzerland.

Andrea del Sarto. Baptism of our Lord.
Andrea del Sarto (1486-1530), copy of 17th century
“Baptism of our Lord”.

In 1511, Sarto did a grisaille mural for the Scalzo brethren in Florence, and this painting replicates that composition.

Note: the backside of the painting contains the signature “Andrea del Sarto” and the old label “Andrea dal Sarto / Bozzetto dell'affresco dipinto a chiaroscuro, allo Scalzo in Firenze” (“Andrea del Sarto/ a chiaroscuro sketch of the mural created for Scalzo in Florence). Painting has been relined. Crack patterns, retrofitted.
