A self-portrait “Reading” of Michiel Sweerts (estimated at 36,360 – 54,550 EUR) from a private Basel collection was last time officially available to public at the exhibition in Rome in 1959. The artwork is typical to the manner of the artist: colour and light effects, spiritual mood and calmness of model. The painting was acquired in London in 1950-s (probably at Christie’s) by Dr. Reber from Lausanne as thought an artwork from Vermeer. Later the painting became part of the collection of Manuel Gasser from Zurich, and it was when Rolf Kultzen attributed the painting to Michiel Sweerts and also included it into his dissertation. A similar work depicting a young man, dated 1646/50, is now part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands, and another one, dated 1652, is kept in the Detroit Institute of Art Museum.

“Winter scene with fun ice-skating at the ruins of Villers-la-Ville”, 1850, from Frederik Marinus Kruseman (esimated at 27,270 – 36,360 EUR) shows the ruins of the Cistercian abbey Villers-la-Ville, built in 1146 for the Clairvaux Abbey in the south of Brussels. The flourishing time of the abbey was during the XIIIthe century, when it united 100 monks and 300 laymen. In 1796 it was robbed and destroyed. The painting at auction is the first depiction of the ruins of Villers-la-Ville by Kruseman. Later versions relate to 1851, 1857 and 1862.

The auction will feature “Still life with pumpkins” by a German artist from the baroque epoch Christian Berentz, who was famous for his depiction of fruit. His artwork makes part of the collection of prominent museums in Italy.

On June 28th, 2019, the summer sale at Schuler Auktionen became an international news sensation.
