“Lamentation of Christ” by Flemish Renaissance artist Willem Key and his studio (estimated at EUR 19 050 – 28 570) is one of the versions of this religious scene by the artist.

Prof. Koenraad Jonckheere in his publication mentioned two similar works of portrait orientation, signed and dated 1553. He also mentioned five other works depicting this scene of landscape orientation, which are not comparable to the offered painting, because they do not have key features typical to the artwork by Willem Key (Jonckheere, Koenraad: Willem Key (1516–1568) Portrait of a Humanist Painter. 2011, p. 136-142 and 181-182).

Mr. Gijs G. Keij proposes two hypotheses how several versions of “Lamentation of Christ” appeared. First one suggests that the painting at auction had been chronologically painted the first and was so much liked by the artist that he arranged this composition to be repeated in larger sizes. Another one is that portrait orientation paintings had been created first, and the smaller size painting with fewer characters offered at auction was made later.
