"Green light – sell and buy: Artive is a new due diligence tool for the art and antique market"

Artive is non-profit organisation administering digital archive for works of art and cultural property. It emerged from Art Recovery Group, which was founded by Chris Marinello. As an inclusive database Artive consolidates a great number of various databases all containing claimed, looted, stolen, illicitly transferred and destroyed works of art and cultural property. Artive is set to serve professionals and the general public. It is supplied with the advanced technology of image recognition and over 500 fields of searchable data.

Artive serves the idea of integration of international art market into the unified system facilitating the transparency of art transactions. Therefore it encourages everybody to register claimed works of art, collectibles, cultural property and make a search in the database prior to any operations like acquisition, sale or transportation.

Not only objects but also archeological sites threatened by illegal excavation, forgeries and fakes can be registered in the database to avert potential risks associated with appearance of such objects on the market. The idea behind these procedures is combining forces while making international art market a safer place considering up to 95% of fake antiques selling on eBay.

Artive is available to anybody with free of charge account registration. The search in the database is carried out against such parameters as image submitted, description of the work, attribution and provenance. The completion of the search process results in the detailed report.

Ariane Moser, COO, Artive, emphasizes the importance of due diligence in the art market. Everybody who deals with antiquities or art to some extent should exercise due diligence measures. This means before dealing with an object could it be buying or selling to get as much information about it as possible considering time, efforts and finances available. A metaphoric comparison given by Ariane Moser is green and red light on the pedestrian control box, “Red – wait, green – cross with care.” If you have to deal with antiquities first wait and check them. Once all possible measures are made go ahead and this would mean crossing with care. No one gives you guarantees but you are still on a safer side.
