Napoleon’s I letters from the time of his Russian campaign in 1812 in the Hermann Historica online military antiques sale


During the period from 21 to 25 June 2021 Hermann Historica will be holding an online auction and will present rare military antiques, international orders and medals, the Günter Adlung exclusive helmet collection and two military trucks from the beginning of WWII. The top lots include a German iron horse muzzle (dated 1562), a large French curb bit (16th century), a representative Leather Portfolio of Louis François Legrand, Secretary General of the Imperial Mail (1804 – 1815), an Indian shield (circa 1800) and five letters from the time of Napoleon’s I Russian campaign in 1812 signed by his own hand.

A German iron horse muzzle, Germany, dated 1562 (starting price € 5’000). The muzzle delicately worked in blackened wrought iron. The semi-circular body composed of finely wrought bars with riveted joins, interspersed with engraved appliqués in fine openworked sheet iron. Dated "1562" on the top. The movable iron eyelets for the bridle still attached.

A large French curb bit, 2nd half of the 16th century (starting price € 4’000). Wrought iron with chiselled and engraved decoration. Two-part mouthpiece, the strongly angled tongue plate with attached chain as toggles. Exceptionally long, very finely curved cheeks with attached original connection chains.

A large Gothic historicism chamfron in the style of circa 1480 (starting price € 3’500). The chamfron forged in several pieces, with turned edges and finely fluted adornment. A blank escutcheon riveted to the forehead, the eye holes covered with domed, perforated metal sheets. Riveted ear protection. The articulated neck guard attached with leather strips. The straps made of chamois-dressed leather. The chamfron of unusually large dimensions.

Кожаный портфель Луи Франсуа Леграна, генерального секретаря Императорской почты 1804 – 1815 гг. (начальная цена € 2’800) из красного тисненого сафьяна с золотым тиснением в виде виноградной листвы с усиками и цветами. С лицевой стороны надпись золотом по-французски "LE SÉCRÉTAIRE GÉNÉRAL OF POST IMPÊRIALES". Металлический пятиступенчатый замок с застежкой и посеребренные латунные уголки. Внутри портфель обтянут красной и зеленой сафьяновой тисненой кожей, боковина-гармошка состоит из 6 складок, изнутри обтянута зеленым сукном.

Louis François Legrand (1752-1841) was appointed to the role of a Secretary General of the Imperial Post on 28 July 1791. He retained this position until he retired in 1816, he had therefore been on duty during four governments, and played an important role in the organisation of post service.

An iron round shield, historicism, circa 1880 (starting price € 1’400) depicting a battle scene in the Punic War with many figures against architecture background. Repousse and chasing, around the edge decorated with the images of putti and warlords. The reverse with the eyelet and engraved number "N53".

  • A high-quality round shield made on the model, which is currently kept in the collection of the Royal Armoury of Madrid (Real Armería de Madrid).

An iron Indian shield, circa 1800 (starting price € 1’200) with reinforced edge and four bosses. Damascening with golden inlay. The reverse has four suspension rings, a pillow for hand in the centre surrounded by brocade fabric.

A long letter signed by Napoleon’s I own hand (starting price € 700) addressed to Louis Alexandre Berthier. The letter was written on the day when Napoleon I left Smolensk for Moscow with the intention to give a decisive battle. In this letter Napoleon I gives instructions on governance of Smolensk after his departure. With his own hand Napoleon I wrote four lines in PS and autograph “NP”. The sale features five letters of Napoleon from the time of his Russian campaign, dated 22 August 1812 from Smolensk, 24 August 1812 from Smolensk, 05 October 1812 from Moscow, 06 October 1812 from Moscow, 14 November 1812 from Smolensk (at the retreat).

A helmet for reserve officers in the Royal Saxon 1st Leib Grenadier Regiment No. 100, circa 1915 (Starting Price € 1’200). The black lacquered body made of replacement material (rough surface, indentations) with silver-plated, nickel-silver mounts, a bar at the nape. Silver-plated star with appliquéd, gilt reserve cross and crowned state coat of arms. Base plate with four round-head screws (incorrectly replaced), narrow, smooth spike. Flat chinscales on rosettes with leather underlay (fixed with modern adhesive tape on the inside), both cockades in Saxon form, made of lacquered sheet metal. Ochre-coloured silk rep lining, ochre-coloured leather sweatband (torn), embossed "Germania", the rear visor with red underlay, the front visor lined in green. Comes with the (stained) cover, woven in ochre-coloured and field-grey thread with the regiment number stitched in red cloth at the front. Slightly damaged in places, signs of age.

Wrought iron. Semicircular powder flask with delicate grooves on the obverse, with a spring-mounted, spirally fluted spout (Starting Price € 960). Four lateral suspension rings, the reverse with riveted belt clasp.

Calotte-shaped helmet made of brown artificial leather, covered with a thin copper plate and ribbed iron bars fastened with covets. Copper elements decorated with a monster face. Copper-plated on the top, crowned with Phurba. Copper-plated visor made of iron, aventail with seven leather strips.

A Persian Khula Khud, 19th century (starting price € 600) – a grooved helmet decorated with silver inlay damascening. Topped with a plume holder and an adjustable noseband in front with two more plume holders above. Short aventail with chainmail.
