XVI-XX century rare military antiques at the Summer 2021 Schuler Auktionen sale


On the 14th, 16th, 17th, and 18th of June, 2021, the Schuler Auktionen will hold a summer sale and will present 116 lots of rare military antiques. Such collector items as a Polish and a Hungarian suit of armour, a Chanfron - the armoured plating protecting a horse's head, a Persian Sipar shield, German armoured gauntlets, a French cuirass, a Pickelhaube - a Prussian spiked helmet, along with other interesting lots will be put up for auction.

The top lot will be the suit of armour from the 2nd half of the XVII century (estimated at EUR 1’360 - 2’730). The helmet, gorget, breastplate, backplate, and spaulders are linked together out of 6 elements, the fauld with an armoured skirt is made from 5 strips of metal.

Note:

  • Minimal signs of corrosion.
  • The leather belt is added.
  • The suit of armour is hung on a wooden stand.

The chanfron was the plate armour protecting a horse’s head (estimated at EUR 730.00 - 1’450). Has signs of corrosion, is plated with reinforcing riveted strips of metal. The sides have two belt loops each.

A pair of armoured sabatons (estimated at EUR 450 - 820) made in the XIX century in the late Gothic style of the XVI century from polished iron.

A round Persian Sipar shield (estimated at EUR 360 - 730) made from Damascus steel (wootz) of a slightly curved shape with plated trim. The shield is adorned on the perimeter with decorative steel bands and stylised flowers, the centre contains four shield bosses. The entire surface of the shield is adorned with a superfine weave pattern of gold flowers.

A French cuirass (estimated at EUR 360 - 730) of the 1855 model for a rank cuirassier. The breastplate and backplate are connected by transverse belts with braided brass chains. Decorative rivets on the edges, hooks on the inside to fasten the underlay. Flanged cut-outs for the arms and neck.

  • The breastplate has an inscription inside: " Manufre. Imp. deKlingenthal, Juin 1880".

A Prussian version of the spiked helmet - the Pickelhaube (estimated at EUR 270 - 550), 1905 model, for a cavalry horseman. Steel dome, the pin and its base are made of Neusilber. The eagle and the scaly band are made of yellow metal. Cocardes: Reich and Prussia. Hat box.

An ancient Italian cabasset helmet. The tall one-piece dome is crowned with a ridge with a small pointed outgrowth. Narrow flanged edges. The inside contains rivets for fastening the underlay.

A French officer's helmet (estimated at EUR 180 - 360) of the 1845 model. The iron dome on the horse-leather hat has a tall brass crest with a relief design and a plume with a red flock of horse hair. The temples have decorated rosaces with a braided brass chain. Original lining.

A French breastplate (estimated at EUR 180 - 360) in the Italian style of the XVI century with an etched decor on the entire surface in the form of a flower ornament. The edges of the breastplate contain rivets for leather belts, the belts themselves are missing. The cut-outs for the neck and arms are thickened on the edges.

A pair of German armoured gauntlets (estimated at EUR 180 - 360) with lamellar fingers and short closed cuffs. The back side of the palm consists of four connected plates. They are riveted and have a leather lining. The lot also includes one fingered glove for the right hand in the XVI century style.

A Shako of a captain, 28th Bernese Battalion, 1898 (estimated at EUR 160 - 220). Red and black cockade, orange and white pompom. Mark on the backing: AUS DER HU & HEINIGER BERN. Comes with box.
