The upcoming sale at Schuler Auktionen to be held on the 14th, 16th, 17th and 18th of June, 2021, will offer some interesting Russian art lots – a polychrome aquatint by Serge Poliakoff, rare 19th century icons and outstanding cloisonne enamels.

Among the top lots in the upcoming sale is a polychrome aquatint "Composition grise, bleue et rouge" (estimated at EUR 2'730 – 4'550) by Serge Poliakoff – a celebrated tashisme and abstract art painter. The art of Serge Poliakoff was highly influenced by Wassily Kandinsky – it was then when Poliakoff met Kandinsky and decided to quit academic style in favour of abstract art. Works by Poliakoff make part of the collection of the leading museums.

  • Water traces along the upper edge.
  • Slightly yellow and partly rippled paper.
  • Micro punctures in the right and left part of the image.

An Old Believers icon of the Burning bush in oklad (estimated at 1'450 – 2'910 EUR) depicts the Mother of God with Christ child in the centre on an eight-pointed star and 16 petals rosette. Above the rosette in the centre is the image of Moses with Habakkuk on the left and St. Hosea on the right. Under the rosette: three young men in a fiery furnace. The rosette is surrounded by the following Biblical scenes: Moses and the Burning Bush, the Call of Isaiah, Ezekiel’s vision, Jacob’s Ladder. Upper section: God the Father with St. Daniel and St. Arethas. Lower section: a believer surrounded by Solomon and David. In edges: 4 prophets. Gold plated oklad (St. Petersburg), workmaster “BS”, 1866-70 and “NN” for Nikolai Nikitin (1845-1874). Decorated with fine engraving, repousse and chasing. Halos decorated with glass beads (one missing).

Icon of the Mother of God of Korsun (estimated at EUR 1'270 – 2'180) shows the Mother of God holding the Chist Child in her left arm cheek to cheek. Fine chrysography of the attire.

  • Private collection, Switzerland. Acquired in the mentioned above gallery in 1980, and since then kept in the same family.

An icon of the Trinity (estimated at EUR 1'090 – 2'180) shows three angels sitting at the set table. In the foreground Abraham is shown and in the background architecture landscape with the Oak of Mamre and rocks.

The Mother of God of Vladimir (estimated at EUR 1'270 – 2'180) depicts the Mother of God holding the Christ Child in her right arm cheek to cheek. The background decorated with acanthus repousse and chasing.

Icon of the Nativity of the Mother of God with oklad, 19th century (estimated at EUR 730 – 1'450), in the central upper part depicts the scene of Mary's birth. In the lower part a scene with a woman preparing a bath for a newly born is shown. On the left: Joachim and Anna meeting at the Golden Gate. On the right: Joachim and Anna sitting on a bench. In the upper part on the left – Joachim, and on the right – Anna, both notified about the birth of Maria. In the upper central part: God the Father on a cloud. Silver plated oklad with repousse and chasing and engraving. Framing decorated with flower motif. Fabric glued to the wood panel on the reverse side.

  • Ageing, retouching of the framing, small areas with paint loss.
  • Comes with expert conclusion 3034 from Boris Shapovalov, Basel/Colombier.

A rectangular decorative box with rounded edges and hinged cover (estimated at EUR 2'000 – 2'360). The upper surface decorated with the birch-bark ornament decorated with red enamel. Inscribed on the reverse: «FORTITUDINE - VINCIT». Engraving on the inner side of the cover «Given by the Prince of Wales on his return from Russia to Percy W. Doyle - March 10. 1874».

Note:

  • Workmaster mark on the inner part of the cover “V.S.” – Victor Savenkov and “91”.
  • Comes with the original red box.
  • Insignificant signs of use.
  • Percy Doyle W. (1806 ? - 1887) was a British ambassador of the diplomatic corpse.

Two frames (estimated at EUR 550 – 1'090) made of metal plates with stylized two crowned eagles in the upper part and bottom. Floral engraving in edges and on sides. Spiral bar framing a photo. Come without an eyelet or stand.

A pair of decorative spoons (estimated at EUR 550 – 730) with a round scoop and partially spiral handle. Each scoop decorated with cloisonné enamel and an inscription in Cyrillic: «НЕ ВСЯКИЙ ХЛЕБ ПАШЕТ А ВСЯКИЙ ЕГО ЕСТ» (Not everybody ploughs bread but everybody eats it) and «ПРОШУ КУШАТЬ НЕ КОГО НЕ СЛУШАТЬ» (Please eat and don't listen to anybody).

Note:

  • “88” on one of the spoons and numbered “140”
  • Inscription on another spoon "MADE FOR TIFFANY & Co" and numbered “187”
  • Slight signs of use.
