XVI-XIX century collectible militaria: frog-mouth helm, sipar and gorget at the Schuler Auktionen autumn sale 2021


During the period from 13 to 17 September Schuler Auktionen will offer interesting militaria collectibles from Europe, Middle East and Asia, dated to the 16-19 century. Totally 174 lots. The highlights include a “frog-mouth helm”, 17th century ornate gorget, 19th century Indian shield (sipar), German horn powder flask from the 17th century.

“Frog-mouth helm” (estimated at € 760 – 1'900) consists of three parts (dome, front and back) fastened with large rivets. Worn-out metallic surface with signs of ageing. Three through holes on the chest for fastening the helmet to the chest plate. Fine work of the armorer. Such helmets were used in the tournaments in the 15-16th century to protect head.

  • Central peak damaged in the area below the visor up to 10 cm.

Ornate gorget, 1st half of the 17th century, Germany or Switzerland (estimated at € 760 – 1'430) made of hardened steel and probably belonged to an officer. Richly decorated with floral ornament and unidentified family crest in the centre depicting a sun above crossed flowers and a wolf/dog below. Traces of gilding.

Round Indian silver plated shield sipar (estimated at € 480 – 1'430) decorated with fine floral ornament along the whole surface and adorned on the perimeter with decorative gilded bands and stylized flowers. The centre contains four shield bosses decorated with fine geometric ornament. The reverse side contains a velvet protection for hand.

German horn powder flask from the 17th century (estimated at € 290 – 570) of a flattened shape, decorated with carving “Horse hunting with dogs ” on the front side. The reverse side decorated with carving depicting concentric circles.

A light iron breast plate (estimated at € 190 – 380) with flanged edges. Hammer marks inside and remaining number of previous collection “23”. Poor condition of the inner leather covering.

A Persian kulah-khud helmet (estimated at € 170 – 380) from the 19th century with iron dome, decorated with fine floral engraving. Plume holder on the top and on the sides. Aventail with chainmail.

Indian-Persian round sipar shield (estimated at € 100 – 190) with eight concentric decorative ribbed bars and four bosses with a protective pillow on the reverse side. D. 50 cm.
