The theft of an icon gifted by Putin to a monastery on the Valdai lake has been uncovered
Thanks to the collaborative actions of the MIA and the FSB, two suspects in the theft of an icon and other valuables from the Valdaisky Iversky Bogoroditsky Svyatoozersky Monastery were detained.

During the night between the 31st of August and the 1st of September, 2020, two intruders penetrated the church and abducted the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God, the altar crucifix, as well as other articles made of gold.
Police officers were able to determine that two citizens of Volkhov could be involved in the theft. As a result of the operation conducted, both perpetrators were apprehended at the same time. During a search, part of the stolen valuables, including the icon and the altar cross, were discovered in the garage of one of the detainees.
In 2001, the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God was presented as a gift to the Valdaisky Monastery by president of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.
